Alberto Ginastera (1916-83)

Impresiones de la Puna, for flute and string quartet (1934)

Ginastera’s lyrical Impresiones de la Puna dates from the earliest period of his career, and, accordingly, reflects the folk music of his native Argentina fairly explicitly.

Its first movement, “Quena,” alludes to a traditional Andean bamboo flute dance. During the second, “Cancion,” mournful cadences echo between the flute and strings. The final “Danza,” on the other hand, wraps up the score in a blaze of syncopated rhythms and florid melodies.
